What’s a Read-a-thon?

A Read-a-thon is a reading event that takes place over approximately 2 weeks per track in the Fall. It encourages children to read for pleasure – it motivates reluctant readers to give reading a go, and eager readers to read more widely.  At Salem, each class will be tracking the number of minutes they read and a school-wide tally will be announced.  Special-themed ‘Reading for Minutes’ activities will take place in each classroom.

The PTA and staff will also conduct special school-wide activities based on the theme to attract the attention of the students and keep them excited about reading.  Past examples include Author Day, Character Dress Up Day, and more.

The Read-a-thon is also a fundraising activity for the PTA.  Students may ask family and friends to sponsor them in their reading via the Read-a-thon website.  We will also be holding the Book Fair, including a Family Night, during this time.  All proceeds will go to the PTA to help support student activities throughout the year.
